Reading PDFs Aloud
PDF documents can be read aloud using accessibility features available on your computer or within your PDF application. The ability to read a PDF aloud depends on the application being used and whether the PDF contains accessible, selectable text.
On Mac
- Preview: Select the text you want to hear, then choose Edit → Speech → Start Speaking.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader: Go to View → Read Out Loud → Activate Read Out Loud, then choose Read This Page or Read to End of Document.
- Safari or Chrome: Open the PDF in your browser, select the text, and use the macOS speech features when available.
- Scanned PDFs: Scanned documents may contain images instead of actual text. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is required to convert the image into selectable text before it can be read aloud.
You can find macOS speech accessibility settings under:
System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak
You can also select text and use your configured keyboard shortcut to have macOS read it aloud.
On Windows PC
- Microsoft Edge: Open the PDF in Edge and select Read aloud from the toolbar or right-click menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + U.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader: Go to View → Read Out Loud → Activate Read Out Loud, then choose Read This Page or Read to End of Document.
- Windows Narrator: Windows includes Narrator, a built-in screen reader that can read text and other elements displayed on your screen. It can be enabled under Settings → Accessibility → Narrator.
- Scanned PDFs: If the PDF contains scanned images rather than selectable text, OCR is needed to recognize the text before it can be read aloud.
